Rockstar Ronan

It’s no secret – I am in love with Taylor Swift. Her songs make me so happy and I listen to them all the time, so when my friends told me to go home and listen to Ronan I did it immediately. I didn’t expect to hear a bittersweet, heartbreaking song about childhood cancer, nor did I expect to be so fired up about it.

You see, after I listened to the song, I felt the immediate need to read Maya Thompson’s blog (the mother of little Ronan) which you can find here, and I have been reading it obsessively the past few days. It’s a raw account of an amazingly strong family plagued with an illness that no one should have to encounter, but also peppered with facts. One in particular that shocked me was just how little funding childhood cancer gets – despite being the largest cause of death in children.

So I encourage everyone to do something about it. We have amazing scientists and medical professionals, but they can only do so much. They need the funds to find a cure, and so do these kids. I will be holding a Run for Ronan at my school next year and I implore that you do something similar. Don’t give up until this is gone, until no parents has to deal with the heartbreak that Ronan’s did.
