Communication comes in many forms, and throughout the years it’s certainly developed in more ways then one. Not only have more ways to communicate come to light, communication has also become less formal and has the potential to reach a much larger audience.
This can be a good and bad thing. It does make it easier to bully people or spread false information quickly, but if people use our relatively new-found ability to communicate to large audiences or more quickly properly, it can only be a fantastic thing.
Take for example, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries or the numerous other webseries adaptations of famous classic novels. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries takes the well known tale of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and turns it into something easily accessible that’s new and exciting and easier for younger audiences to relate to.
Or think of the countless Facebook pages, blogs, vlogs, Tumblr’s, all dedicated to doing something to change the wrongs in the world. Think of the thousands of ways that we can make a real difference because of how much easier it is to use new communication to gain a following of people all interested in the same thing, from all over the world.
Think of the people like me, with best friends and family on the other side of the world. Even since I was born it’s become easier to talk to my family, with the development of video calling and instant messaging. If it’s become easier within these past fifteen years, imagine how much easier it will become in the next fifteen.
So while the development of communication has been detrimental to some things, I would disagree with those who think it is detrimental to face-to-face communication. We still communicate face-to-face but we also have a whole new world of possibilities to communicate in other ways and we’re making the most of it. We’ve found new ways to communicate individually, or with groups of people. We’ve found new ways to communicate emotions and stories.
People keep saying communication is key, so it can only be a good thing that there’s now a thousand different ways to do it.
